Back-to-School Night: A Moment of Truth

Back-to-School Night provides the cornerstone for building parent loyalty.  How can you make it successful? Make sure to focus the event around values (quality), systems (processes, procedures, policies) and people (verbal and nonverbal communication).

Communicate values:
Highlight your vision for student learning.
Show parents how you are accountable for performance.
Communicate that you focus on what works.
Ask parents for their feedback.  Follow-up.

Manage systems:
Make the evening flow smoothly.
Provide clear communication and signage.
Have enough seats.
Set the thermostat for maximum comfort.
Plan a strong opening as parents enter the school and a strong closing as they leave.

Prepare your staff:
Anticipate parent needs and questions.
Choose a small number of big messages and communicate them effectively
Evaluate your current information:  Is it user friendly, clear, memorable? Does it speak in the vocabulary of a parent?  Is the tone appropriate?
Demonstrate confidence, competence and commitment.
Smile and show friendly faces.

This should get you started in organizing this moment-of-truth event.  Strategic planning will go a long way in establishing your school’s credibility and paving the path for a strong relationship between home and school.

What have we missed?
